Desk Models
A desk is one of the pieces of furniture you sit at for the longest time during the day. For this reason, not only appearance but also surface area, height, material, and the dimensions of the area where the desk will be placed should be evaluated together. As Kastra, we have been providing solutions for home offices and workspaces with the furniture we have produced since 2011. On this page, you will find desk models and points to consider when choosing the right desk.
Surface Area and Dimensions
Surface area is the first issue to be determined for a desk. Computers, notebooks, and work equipment must be able to stay comfortably on the desk at the same time. Wide and large desk models are suitable for jobs that require dual screens or paper-based work. In narrow rooms and home offices, small desk models provide the necessary surface without making the room feel cramped. Corner desk layouts, on the other hand, utilize unused corners of the room to create a large surface along the walls.
How Much Surface is Enough?
The nature of the work determines the surface requirement. A narrow tabletop is sufficient for a setup where you work only with a laptop; however, for most users who keep notebooks, mugs, and documents nearby, this area soon becomes insufficient. In dual-screen setups, the depth of the tabletop is as important as its width, as the screens need to be at eye level. Listing the equipment that will stay on the desk permanently and placing them on paper is the most reliable method for determining the dimensions.
Material and Surface
The material determines the desk's durability in daily use. In our Carla desk, natural oak veneer is applied onto MDF using a pressing method; since a protective oil treatment is applied to the wooden parts, the surface is resistant to scratches. For those who prefer solid wood desks, solid wood surfaces offer a heavier and more permanent use; it is a long-term choice as the surface can be renewed over the years. An easy-to-wipe surface makes maintenance easier on a desk used constantly throughout the day.
Difference Between Veneer and Solid Wood
The two structures meet different expectations. In veneer surfaces, a thin layer of natural wood is applied onto a carrier like MDF by pressing; the result is a tabletop that gives a natural wood appearance but is lighter and dimensionally stable. In solid surfaces, the entire tabletop is wood; it is heavier and can be sanded and renewed over time. Veneer is practical in a home office that is frequently rearranged; solid wood is a long-term choice for a permanent study.
Cable Management and Under-Desk Area
The area under the desk is the most neglected part of a desk. Thinking in advance about where the outlet, charger cable, and screen cables will pass directly affects the daily use of the desk. Gathering cables behind the tabletop both organizes the appearance and prevents feet from getting tangled. If a drawer unit is to be placed under the desk, we recommend measuring the free height under the tabletop in advance so that the chair can fit comfortably.
Selection According to User
The user profile also affects the choice. In office desk layouts, cable management, equipment space, and long-term use are priorities. In the selection of student desks and youth desks, sufficient surface area for study materials, a durable tabletop, and harmony with other furniture in the room come to the fore. Modern youth desk models provide a spacious look in small rooms with their simple lines and do not create harmony problems when the rest of the room changes over time.
Height and Chair Compatibility
Height and seating compatibility determine comfort during long-term work. The difference between the desk height and the chair's seating height directly affects the elbow and shoulder angle. In a standard desk, the tabletop height is around 75 cm; the matching seating height is approximately 45 cm. The 30 cm difference allows the elbows to remain level with the tabletop. If you use a height-adjustable chair, you can fine-tune this difference according to the individual. We recommend evaluating the chair to be used together while choosing the desk;you can examine our desk chairmodels to establish a setup compatible with your desk.
Where Should the Desk Be Placed?
The position of the desk within the room is as decisive as the surface dimensions. Positioning it to the side of a window is the most balanced choice in most cases: it benefits from daylight, no reflection occurs on the screen, and light coming from the front does not strain the eyes. Placing the desk with its back to the wall makes the room feel more spacious; placing it facing the room is preferred in layouts where meetings and interviews are held. We recommend taking the location of the power outlets into account when making the decision.
Desk Prices
Desk prices vary according to the tabletop material, dimensions, and surface finish. There is a price difference between solid wood surfaces and veneer surfaces. Current desk models, dimensions, and prices are listed on product cards. Dimensional changes and special coating requests are other factors that affect the price; in project-based work, unit cost planning changes as the quantity increases.
When Does a Corner Layout Make Sense?
A corner desk significantly increases the total surface area by using two walls of the room at once. This layout works practically for those who want to keep their computer on one wing and paper work on the other. On the other hand, because corner desks connect two walls of the room, they restrict furniture placement and leave no flexibility in moving. If you are considering using the room differently in the future, placing a straight desk in the corner provides a similar area in a more flexible way.
In Student and Youth Rooms
In student rooms, a desk is used for years, and the user's needs change during this time. A surface that is sufficient during elementary school years may remain narrow in high school and university years. For this reason, we recommend choosing the dimensions according to the needs of a few years from now, not today. The surface being easy to wipe is also of particular importance for this age group. Models with simple lines provide harmony even when the rest of the room changes; designs with a distinct character may become outdated within a few years.
Usage Areas
Home Office
In home office use, the desk turns a corner of the room into a permanent workspace. A desk placed near a window allows for the use of daylight; positioning the screen with its back to the window reduces reflection. Leaving enough space behind the desk for the chair to be pulled back comfortably makes daily use easier.
Study Corner in the Bedroom
In homes without a separate study, the desk is often set up in the bedroom. In this layout, the desk not being visible from the bed makes it easier for the room to return to its resting function in the evenings. A compact desk placed next to the wardrobe or in line with the window provides this separation. We recommend keeping the number of items that will stay permanently on the desk limited so that the surface does not remain cluttered; a setup that can be cleared after work makes it easier to transition between the two functions of the room.
Business and Project
In business and project use, desks are planned as multiple units in offices. Production in the same dimensions and color provides a holistic appearance in open offices. Since we do the production from start to finish ourselves, we can prepare the desks at the same standard in project-based work. You can contact us for your special dimension, tabletop color, and coating requests.
Delivery and Installation
Desks mostly arrive in parts and are assembled on-site. This facilitates transportation in narrow stairs and elevators. We recommend that you check the door width of the room where the desk will be placed and the stair turn, if any, before ordering; especially in models with large tabletops, this measurement can be decisive. Checking that all four legs of the desk are in full contact with the floor after installation prevents future wobbling.
Maintenance
Maintenance directly affects the lifespan of the desk. We recommend that you wipe the surface with a damp cloth without letting stains wait and dry it with a dry cloth. Using coasters for hot glasses and mugs prevents marks from forming on the surface. Alcohol, bleach, and abrasive substances should be avoided during cleaning. For solid wood surfaces, light sanding and oiling done once a year remove accumulated scratches and bring the tabletop closer to its appearance on the first day.
Production and Warranty
The wooden products we produce have a repair and replacement guarantee against manufacturing defects.
