Bookcase Models
Beyond keeping books organized, a bookcase is a piece of furniture that defines the character of a living space. As Kastra, the bookcase models we have been producing since 2011 are crafted with a construction that combines the warmth of wood with the durability of a metal profile. On this page, you will find our material structure, types of bookcases based on their usage areas, and points to consider for the right selection all in one place. You can contact us directly for your custom size and project requests.
The first determining factor in choosing a bookcase is the dimensions of the wall where it will be placed and the load it will carry. Books create a much heavier load than expected on a full shelf; therefore, shelf thickness and frame connection determine whether the bookcase will remain standing without sagging over the years. Since we support wooden shelves with a metal profile frame in Kastra bookcases, the shelves maintain their shape under heavy book loads. We can determine the dimensions and shelf layout together according to your intended use.
Material and Construction
Wood: Spruce and Oak
In our bookcases, the wooden sections are produced from 1st-class spruce wood, with moisture levels reduced through kiln drying. Kiln-dried spruce is less prone to shifting due to moisture and temperature changes in indoor spaces and does not warp over time. Since we apply a protective oil treatment instead of varnish to the wooden surfaces, the texture remains natural and the surface becomes resistant to scratches. For those who prefer a natural oak frame, we also have oak options such as Veyra; oak offers a more prominent grain texture and a darker tone.
Metal Profile Frame
The metal profile forms the supporting skeleton of the bookcase. The combined use of a wooden shelf and a metal frame provides both a modern and industrial look as well as a sturdy structure under heavy loads. This combination results in a functional bookcase that is not just decorative, but one that will carry books for many years.
Bookcase Types
Wall-Mounted, Shelved, and Open Systems
Our bookcases are prepared in different layouts based on their usage style. Wall-mounted models utilize vertical height in limited floor areas and save space in small rooms. Shelved closed systems are suitable for books and files that need protection from dust. Open system bookcases, on the other hand, allow for displaying both books and decorative objects, and achieving a spacious look without partitioning the room. Our models such as Book, Intium, and Ode accommodate these different layouts; some products, as in the Intium model, are also offered with a wide range of height options.
Color and Finish
Color and finish are decisive for harmony with other furniture in the space. You can determine the wood tones and metal profile color according to your order, and keep the bookcase in the same line as the table orcoffee tablein your living room. Current color, dimension, and model options are listed on product cards; custom size requests are determined together during the ordering phase.
Shelf Span and Load Capacity
The most common problem with bookcases is the shelves sagging in the middle over time. This is determined by two things: the span of the shelf, meaning the distance between two vertical supports, and the shelf thickness. As the span increases, a shelf of the same thickness flexes more. Books are among the heaviest loads per square meter; therefore, metal profile support becomes decisive for shelves with wide spans. In our models, the metal profile frame carries this load and ensures the wooden shelf maintains its form. Adding intermediate support on long shelves is also a known way to prevent sagging.
Shelf Height and Contents
Planning what will be placed on the shelves in advance prevents subsequent incompatibility issues. While narrower shelf spacings are sufficient for standard novels and paperbacks, art books, albums, and file folders require significantly higher spacings. In sections where decorative objects and vases will be placed, shelf spacing becomes a visual decision. We can also determine shelf spacings according to your needs in custom-size production; planning one section high and another narrow allows for accommodating different contents in the same bookcase.
Wall Anchoring and Safety
For tall bookcases, anchoring is not a choice, but a necessity. As shelves fill up, the product's center of gravity shifts upward and the risk of tipping forward increases; this is especially important in homes with children. We recommend anchoring your bookcase to the wall and placing heavy books on the bottom shelves; when these two measures are applied together, the risk is largely eliminated. For wall-mounted and open-system models, mounting points must be chosen according to the wall structure; drywall and brick walls require different anchor solutions.
Custom Size: Niche and Height
Our greatest strength in bookcases is custom-size production: we can change the width and height according to your needs. This becomes decisive when there is an existing niche in the wall or when you want to utilize the ceiling height to its fullest. Trying to fill a niche with standard dimensions often leaves gaps on either side. We recommend checking the width of the wall at the top and bottom separately when taking measurements; in older buildings, these two dimensions are not always the same.
Usage Areas
Where the bookcase will be used largely determines which model is right. Since home and office use carry different priorities, these two should be evaluated separately.
Home Use
In home use, the bookcase is mostly positioned in the living room or study. In the living room, an open-system bookcase adds a personal character to the space by displaying decorative objects and frames alongside books. In the study, a tidy bookcase with a high number of shelves is more functional. The main determinants at home are color harmony with existing furniture and the correct size that fits the room's dimensions.
Office and Project Use
In office and project use, the priority shifts to durability and standard production. We can produce a large number of bookcases in the same size and color for office libraries, waiting areas, and meeting rooms. In venues such as hotel lobbies, lounges, and cafes, the bookcase is used as both decor and a partitioning element; for these projects, we produce at widths and heights specific to the space's dimensions. Since we carry out the production from start to finish ourselves, it is possible to prepare all units in a single concept at the same standard.
One of our greatest strengths is custom-size production. In our wooden bookcase models, we can change dimensions such as width and height according to your request. This is an important advantage, especially in cases where the bookcase needs to fit perfectly into a specific wall or niche space; we can produce a bespoke bookcase for the space in areas where standard dimensions do not fit.
How to Choose a Bookcase?
Selection Criteria
We recommend looking at a few concrete points to choose the right bookcase. The first is dimensions: the width and height of the area where the bookcase will be placed, and the clearance to be left with the ceiling and side furniture should be measured in advance. The second is shelf layout; if you are going to store mostly books, shelf spacing and count gain importance, while for decorative use, open compartments become significant. The third is material and color harmony; since spruce and oak offer different tones and textures, they should be evaluated along with your existing furniture.
Care and Cleaning
Care directly affects the lifespan of the bookcase. We recommend wiping wooden surfaces with a damp cloth without letting stains sit, and then drying with a dry cloth. Metal profile surfaces are also cleaned with a damp cloth in the same way. Keeping the product away from direct sunlight preserves the wood's color and texture; alcohol, bleach, and abrasive substances should be avoided during cleaning.
Delivery and Assembly
Bookcases arrive in parts and are assembled on-site; this facilitates transport in narrow stairs and elevators. For tall models, not only the ceiling height of the room but also the clearance needed while bringing the bookcase into an upright position is important. During assembly, we recommend checking that the product stands perfectly parallel to the wall and that the shelves are level; in a bookcase installed on a sloped floor, this slope becomes more apparent once the shelves are filled.
Production and Warranty
The wooden bookcases we produce are under a 5-year warranty and are offered with a one-to-one replacement guarantee, excluding user errors. This long warranty period is an indicator of the confidence we have in the sturdy construction supported by a metal profile; this is also why it differs from the two-year period in our chair categories. You can find current models, dimension, and color options on the product cards; you can evaluate them together with our other living space products such asconsolesandTV unitsto create a cohesive layout. For your custom size and project requests, if you provide us with your wall width, ceiling height, and what will be placed on the shelves, we can determine the solution suitable for you together.
