Wicker Chair Models
A wicker chair is a lightweight, naturally textured chair type that combines a wooden frame with a hand-woven wicker seat and back surface. As Kastra, we have been producing wicker chair models since 2011, preparing them for homes, cafes, and restaurants with kiln-dried beech frames and either natural cane or rope wicker weaving. On this page, you will find information about types of wicker, construction, maintenance requirements, and points to consider when choosing the right model. You can contact us directly for custom finish and project inquiries.
Types of Wicker Weaving
Two primary types of weaving stand out in wicker chairs. Natural cane is prepared by weaving thin strips obtained from the rattan plant; its open texture provides a breathable and flexible seat. Rope wicker offers a tighter and denser weave with a more pronounced texture and a more solid surface. The Wishbone Wicker Chair is an example of our models with a natural cane seat, while the Wishbone Rope Wicker Chair features a rope wicker seat. We recommend choosing the weaving type based on the texture of the space where the chair will be used and the intensity of daily use.
Which Weave is Suitable for Which Use?
The two weaves cater to different priorities. The open texture of natural cane provides air permeability; this difference becomes particularly noticeable in summer for dining tables used for long periods. Conversely, the open texture allows crumbs and dust to settle between the weaves. Since rope wicker forms a more closed surface, it is practical for daily cleaning and is preferred by high-traffic businesses. In terms of appearance, cane looks finer and lighter, while rope wicker appears more prominent and textured.
Frame and Construction
The lifespan of a wicker chair is determined as much by the frame as it is by the weave. Our frames are crafted from 1st-class beech wood, the moisture content of which has been reduced through kiln-drying; this ensures that the wood moves less with changes in humidity and temperature, allowing the frame over which the weave is tensioned to maintain its form over time. Because the wood sections are treated with filler and polish, the surface is resistant to scratching. In some models, such as the Cesca Cane Chair, the wooden frame is combined with a chrome-plated metal base to provide additional sturdiness.
Why is the Frame So Important?
Sagging of the woven surface is usually a problem with the frame rather than the weave itself. The strips are woven onto the frame at a specific tension; if the frame expands over time, this tension drops, and the surface sags in the middle. The rigid structure of kiln-dried beech helps the frame maintain its dimensions over the years. In models with chrome-plated metal frames, the metal carries the load while the wooden frame only maintains the tension of the weave; this structure provides a sturdy result with a slim profile.
Models and Variants
Wicker chair models vary according to the type of weave and the form of the frame. Models with natural cane weaving are also referred to as rattan wicker chairs; this surface, prepared by weaving strips obtained from the rattan plant, offers a lightweight and breathable seating experience. Armchair, cushioned, bar-height, and bench versions of the same line are also available. Current options, dimensions, and wicker chair prices are listed on the product cards; price differences occur between variants with arms and cushions versus simple models.
Finish Options
The finish color determines how the wicker chair harmonizes with the space. Our models are offered with finish options such as natural, walnut, dark walnut, and black. Natural tones, combined with the natural wicker texture, provide a bright and spacious look, while walnut and black create a contrast with the light color of the wicker. You can specify the finish color according to your order. We recommend seeing a sample in your space's own light before deciding, as the same finish can look different in daylight and evening lighting.
Cushioned Use
A cushion provides both comfort and protection for a wicker chair. It distributes the load on the woven surface to delay sagging and prevents staining by stopping direct contact. We recommend cushioned variants for dining tables used for long periods and high-traffic businesses. Having a removable cover significantly facilitates repeated cleaning throughout the season. A simple woven surface, on the other hand, is preferred for decorative use and short seating sessions as it preserves the lightness of the form.
Usage Areas
Where the wicker chair will be used largely determines the right model. Below, home use and commercial use are addressed separately.
Home Use
For home use, a wicker chair creates a natural texture in the dining room, kitchen, or living room. Thanks to its lightweight structure, it is easily portable and does not create a space-consuming look around the table. Wicker weaving offers a comfortable experience due to its flexibility during long seating sessions. It easily harmonizes with Scandinavian, bohemian, and classic decorations.
Commercial and Project Use
For commercial and project use, the wicker chair is chosen to create a warm and natural atmosphere in cafes, restaurants, and hotel spaces. While the beech frame provides a durable support for heavy use, the wicker weave adds character to the space. In cafe and restaurant projects, we can produce a large number of chairs in the same model, weave, and finish tone. In busy halls, cushioned variants reduce the frequency of renewal as they protect the weave.
Humidity and Environmental Conditions
Since wicker is a natural material, it reacts to ambient humidity. The standard humidity range of home and commercial interiors is suitable for this material; the lifespan of the weave is shortened in consistently humid or very dry environments. In front of windows receiving direct sunlight, the color of the weave will fade over time. For outdoor spaces such as open terraces and gardens, models specifically produced for outdoor use should be used instead of natural wicker;our garden chaircollection meets this need.
Custom Production
The decision for custom production in wicker chairs is based on the contrast between the frame finish and the weave. A natural finish stays in the same tone as the weave, making the chair appear as a single piece; a dark walnut or black finish highlights the weave and emphasizes the texture. We determine the finish color and model details according to your request. For project purchases, we recommend making this decision based on a single sample before we produce the entire quantity in the same tone.
Can the Weave be Renewed?
The first part to wear out on a wicker chair while the frame remains sturdy is usually the weave. This does not mean the product's lifespan is over: the woven surface can be renewed, allowing the frame to continue to be used. The point to look at when deciding on renewal is whether the frame is still tight. If the frame has expanded, renewing only the weave will not provide a lasting result. For businesses, this is a significantly more economical path than replacing the chairs entirely.
How to Choose a Wicker Chair?
We suggest considering a few concrete points to choose the right wicker chair. First is the type of weave: natural cane is suitable for an open and breathable texture, while rope wicker is suitable for a tighter and more distinct surface. Second is the frame; a hard wood such as kiln-dried solid beech should be preferred for longevity. Third is the finish color; the frame tone should be evaluated together with your table and other wooden surfaces in your space.
Maintenance and Cleaning
Maintenance directly affects the lifespan of a wicker chair. We recommend dusting the wicker weave regularly and wiping the surface with a dry cloth immediately if it comes into contact with liquids. Using a dry brush to remove dust from between the weaves helps the texture stay tight for a long time; we advise against pouring water directly onto the weave. You can wipe the wooden frame with a damp cloth and dry it with a dry cloth. Alcohol, bleach, and abrasive substances should be avoided during cleaning.
Warranty
Our wooden-framed wicker chairs are under a 2-year warranty and are offered with a one-to-one replacement guarantee, excluding user errors. You can find current models, weave and finish options on the product cards;you can evaluate them together withall our chair models. For other options with woven surfaces, you can check ourcane chairpage. For your project inquiries, if you provide the details of your space, the required quantity, and the intensity of use, we can determine the appropriate model, weave type, and finish tone together. In models with woven surfaces, the tension of the weave softens somewhat over time; this is a natural consequence of use and can be resolved through weave renewal without changing the frame.
