Scandinavian Chair Models
The Scandinavian chair is a design line known for its simple
lines, use of natural materials, and forms stripped of unnecessary details. In this line, seating comfort and appearance are considered together; the chair fulfills its function without crowding the space. As Kastra, the
Scandinavian chair models we have been producing since 2011 are prepared with kiln-dried beech
frames and hand-woven surfaces. On this page, you will find model options
and the points to consider when choosing the right chair.
Form: The Wishbone Line
The first form that comes to mind when talking about Scandinavian-style chairs
is the Wishbone line, where the back and arm merge into a single bent piece. In this form, the characteristic Y-detail that connects the chair to the floor is both a structural and visual element. In our collection, the bodies of the Wishbone models are produced seamlessly using a special steam-bending system; the seamless body is an indicator of craftsmanship
and durability.
Why Does Steam Bending Make a Difference?
Bent wood works differently than a frame that is cut and joined. Once the wood is softened with steam, it is shaped in a mold and retains its form upon cooling. Since there are no joints in the resulting piece, there is no connection point that could loosen under load. Considering that the first problems with chairs usually begin at the joints, a seamless
frame is the direct equivalent of a long lifespan. This method also makes it possible to build a sturdy frame with thin profiles; this is why the form appears lightweight.
Frame and Polish
In wooden Scandinavian chair
models, the frame is produced from 1st-class beech wood whose moisture content has been reduced by kiln drying. Kiln-dried beech moves less with changes in humidity and temperature, which ensures a long-lasting use. As filling and polishing processes are applied to the wooden parts, the surface is resistant to scratching. The models are offered in natural, walnut, and black polish options; the natural tone is suitable for bright and spacious rooms, while black is suitable for layouts with contrast.
Seating Surface Options
The seating surface allows the same form to be adapted for different uses. In cane-woven models, the surface is woven by hand and offers a light, breathable seat. In cord-woven
options, the texture is denser and more prominent. Cushioned models provide extra comfort at dining tables where one sits for long periods. The bar-height version of the same line is used for kitchen islands and bar counters.
Which Surface is Suitable for Which Use?
Three surfaces respond to different needs. Cane weaving provides the lightest appearance and offers comfort during long sessions due to its air permeability; however, because it is a natural material, moisture balance is important. Cord weaving is more durable in daily use with its denser texture and is less prone to staining. Cushioned models are the most comfortable option and protect the surface as they do not come into direct contact with the weave. We recommend cushioned models for areas where you sit for long periods like dining tables, and woven models for decorative use.
Dimensions and Harmony with the Table
The lightweight appearance of Scandinavian forms should not push dimensions to the background. In models used with a standard dining table, the seat height should leave a difference of approximately 30 cm from the table. Bar-height versions are prepared for kitchen islands and bar
counters; we recommend measuring your counter height and selecting the model accordingly. When calculating how many chairs will fit around the table, it is sufficient to allocate approximately 60 cm of table edge per person.
How to Choose the Polish Tone?
Natural, walnut, and black correspond to three different characters. The natural tone is the option closest to the wood's own color and makes bright spaces look more spacious; when used with a woven surface, it provides a cohesive texture. The walnut tone relates the chair to other wooden furniture in the space and provides a more settled look. Black highlights the silhouette of the form and creates contrast with light-colored tables. We recommend viewing the sample in the room's own light before making a decision.
Usage Areas
Home Use
Scandinavian-style chair
models adapt to different spaces. Thanks to their light form, they do not create a crowded look around the table in the dining room. In the kitchen, the natural wood and woven texture create a warm atmosphere. It can also be used as a single chair in corner arrangements in the living room. Being able to work with bohemian, modern, and classic decorations is the most distinct feature of this line. This flexibility also ensures that the chair does not look out of place when the rest of the room changes over time.
Bar-Height Version
The bar-height version of the same line is used for kitchen islands and bar
counters. On a long-legged frame, the load and flexing are higher than on a chair of normal height; the advantage of the seamless bent body becomes more apparent here. Choosing the correct version according to the counter height determines most of the comfort.
Using the same line on both the dining table and counter sides of the kitchen connects the two areas in open-plan homes.
Commercial Use
In commercial use, the Scandinavian
chair is preferred in cafes, restaurants, and hotel venues. While the beech frame withstands heavy use, its lightweight structure makes it easy to move the chairs frequently during the day. For project-based work, we can produce a large number of chairs in the same model and polish tone. Using the same frame with a different seating surface in different sections of a hall is a practical way to establish area separation while staying within a single line.
Projects and Bulk Purchases
In cafe and restaurant projects,
working with a single model family is the easiest way to preserve the integrity of the hall.
Offering the same body form with different seating surface and polish variants makes it possible to establish sections between divisions within a single line. We recommend planning the entire need at once; the polish tone will be consistent in products coming from the same batch. If additions are to be made later, we can prepare the same combination again as we keep tone records.
How to Choose?
To choose the right model, we recommend looking at three points. The first is the seating surface: a woven model is suitable for a natural and light look, while a cushioned model is suitable for comfort during long sessions.
The second is the polish tone; the color of the chair should be evaluated together with your table and other wooden surfaces in your space. The third is height; normal height should be preferred for standard tables, and the bar version for counter layouts. If you are unsure, just measure the height of your table or counter and send it to us; we can determine the appropriate version together.
Life of the Woven Surface
The most frequently asked question about the woven surface is sagging. If the frame where the weave is stretched is sturdy and the surface is used regularly,
natural loosening remains very limited over the years. The main factor that accelerates sagging is constant single-point loading on the weave; standing on the chair or placing heavy objects creates this effect. Using a cushion distributes the load to the surface and protects the weave. The fact that worn weaving can be renewed also allows continued use without changing the frame.
Delivery and Inspection
Chairs are delivered to the building entrance. We recommend checking the frame and woven surface in daylight upon delivery; reporting a transport-related issue in the first few days makes the process easier. In bulk purchases, opening all products at the same time and comparing the polish tones side-by-side is the most practical way to see tone consistency.
Maintenance
Maintenance is of particular importance in models with woven surfaces. We recommend regularly clearing the weave of dust and keeping it away from direct sunlight. You can wipe wooden surfaces with a damp cloth and dry them with a dry cloth without letting stains sit. Alcohol, bleach, and abrasive substances should be avoided in cleaning.
Warranty
The wooden models we produce have a 2-year
warranty and are offered with a 1-to-1 replacement guarantee, excluding user errors. For other forms in a similar design line, you can examine ourthonet chair
